A Note on This Beer
Sour fans take note: Norway’s HaandBryggeriet’s Haandbakk is a multi-layered barrel aged Flanders Sour that transcends its predecessors with phenomenal impactful flavor. It also single-handedly takes on the wine world elite with elegant vinous character reminiscent of the most celebrated Reds.
Many beers in this style are known for their red berry tartness. But HaandBryggeriet specifically selects wine barrels from France’s Burgundy region that are known to have years worth of berry tartness already built into them. The brewery adds an additional mix of wild yeast strains into their base beer before allowing the brew to settle in and absorb the saturation of wild bacteria present in the barrel – and the aging commences – for two years!
The result of this labor-intensive process is a fierce impact of lip puckering fruit deliciously highlighted with vanilla, oak and a gamut of earthy flavors that spill over the palate in a long, dry finish. Overripe cherries, signature balsamic vinegar notes and heavy red wine character will surprise and delight with thirst quenching enthusiasm. This is a bold beer that does not sit quietly on the tongue but expands in flavor. And then expands some more.
With top-tier ratings and spots on numerous “Best Beer from Norway” lists, Haandbaak is a vinous, brown sugar ascent into Sour heaven. It offers the sophistication of the world’s finest vintages, with brilliant texture and ‘wild’ attitude.
