Evil Dead Red (2015)
AleSmith Brewing Company
A Note on This Beer
As an adult, the best way to keep the trick-or-treating spirit alive is with wickedly delicious festive beers. But if you’re looking for something edgier than the obvious Pumpkin fare – skip the mainstream and go cult.
Alesmith Brewing Co.’s Evil Dead Red is the Halloween cult favorite among craft beer goers, named for cult horror movie franchise Evil Dead. This Amber Red is celebrated for spicy, roasted malt flavors and a sinister display of hops. This combo has become a renowned, much anticipated bloody homage to the fall holiday.
Evil Dead pours a dark russet with a fruity nose ripe with apricots, orange peel and sharp pine. The malts ride a top-heavy slap of bitter resin before settling into a bready buffet of toasted caramel and nutmeg. A rush of citrus bitters returns to carry out a smooth and dry finish; it boasts a devlish 6.66% ABV but at times, it feels a lot stronger.
It’s generally frowned upon when anyone over the age of 21 dons a gory mask and trolls door to door looking for a handout – but that’s no reason we can't have fun. Gorge on Evil Dead’s profane flavors among friends as you ring in the spookiest night of the year.
Last year most places didn’t get this beer from Alesmith until after the holiday so take advantage of its early release and bring a bottle to every house on the party circuit. On Halloween, evil’s always welcome.
