A Note on This Beer
Today’s 12% ABV Imperial Stout is loaded with cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, and three different kinds of chilies.
Yeah, it’s bold, but don’t freak out. Instead, invite your buddies over for a sip of this Mexican Chocolate goodness and watch THEM freak out when you introduce them to their new favorite Midwest brewery.
The rising stars at Chicago’s Hubbard’s Cave fermented this beast with almond flour for an ultra chewy body, then aged it on toasted oak to smooth the whole thing out and mellow the chili heat. The result is today’s 4.33 UT-rated El Zacatón (2019 - 1).
El Zacatón has already amazed the craftiest palates in Chicago with tasters saying things like “perfectly balanced” and “will drink at every opportunity.”
@Hudson V on Untappd even says, “closest to Abraxas I’ve had!”
That is high praise indeed! But the boys down at Hubbard’s are used to getting compliments.
These Dark Beer masters have a higher Untappd rating than Three Floyds, Toppling Goliath, and Goose Island, but their brews so rarely leave Illinois that even your craftiest buds probably haven’t tried them.
Add a few bottles of today’s Imperial Stout to your collection, and the next time your friends start debating who’s best in the Midwest, you can casually pull one out. “What?” You’ll say, “you guys have never tried Hubbard’s Cave?”
When they stare blankly, it’s time to open El Zacatón and blow their freakin’ minds.
Giant aromas of chocolate and cinnamon come flooding out. Take a sip, and the body is ultra-smooth with no hint of the big ABV.
Take another, and it’s like a fudge drizzled churro with a hint of creamy vanilla, then Ancho and Guajillo chilis add a smokey-sweet note. On the finish, mild heat from Habanero builds on the back of the palate, growing slightly spicier with each sip.
So go ahead. Grab a few bottles of El Zacatón and treat your buddies to one of the best Stouts they’ve never heard of.
