Dark Prophet (2018)
A Note on This Beer
When Funkwerks released their Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Prophet Belgian Dark Strong Ale, Men’s Journal put it on their list of the “Top 10 Colorado Craft Beers.” They praised its strength and complexity, calling it one of the best winter sippers for its plum, brown sugar, and spice notes in a dry, whiskey-like body.
Years later and Dark Prophet’s power hasn’t wavered, it’s only gotten boozier. Now at 11% ABV with additions of bittersweet cacao nibs, it’s easily one of Funkwerks beer master’s most limited and flavorful offerings.
Last year’s version scored an impressive 4.09 on Untappd with users adoring its ensemble of cocoa-dusted plum flavors drenched in vanilla oak. Lightbodied despite its whiskey soaked chocolate heritage, the boozy flavors submerge you without drowning you in sweetness. See if you can pick out brown-sugary allusions of fig and Quad-like toffee and cherry. Untappd drinkers recommend cellaring for a few months, so the chocolate notes really come alive.
We’ve been partnering with Funkwerks essentially since we opened our doors, and they’ve remained beloved by Tavour members ever since. This relationship gives us intimate access to their barrel-aged catalogue, including the dark, whiskey, and fruity riches within Dark Prophet. Try this beer treasure while you have the chance -- we foresee it quikcly vanishing from our shelves.
