A Note on This Beer
Sourheads lend me your tastebuds! Fresh off winning 2 Gold medals at the North American Beer Awards for their Sour Ale expertise, Idaho’s Barbarian Brewing hits us with their jammy Cry Of The Blackbirds -- a four Barrel-Aged Sour brewed with 200 pounds of blackberry and boysenberry puree.
To give this big, 8.5% ABV sour beast some extra dark berry sweetness, Barbarian enhances the character of sun-soaked blackberries by adding Boysenberries: the juicier, sweet-tart cousins of blackberries and raspberries. Then this berryful Sour Ale blend is aged for a year and a half, in four of the jammiest oak red wine barrels Barbarian could get their hands on. Oak-aging for this long delivers oaky vanilla character, and gives the wild cultures ample time to develop floral, fruit-forward notes and a subtle funk tartness that complements the berries beautifully.
Talk about dedication to craftsmanship: Barbarian sorts through a room full of barrels, landing on the rich jamminess only specialized red wine barrels can provide to enhance the fresh, bright summer berry notes.
Tasting this, we’re getting a warm tingly feeling inside knowing Tavour is introducing these rising Sour stars rarely seen outside of Idaho… Or maybe those warm tingles are actually coming from the 9% ABV booziness. You’ll soon find out!
