City of the Sun
Modern Times Beer
A Note on This Beer
In 5 years, Modern Times has taken over West Coast craft. The fiercely original brewing collective started with a small 30bbl system, and quickly converted stubborn San Diego hopheads to the hazy side with soft, juicy IPAs like their 4.19 BA-rated City of the Sun.
Now this employee-owned empire has 5 different locations stretching all the way from San Diego to Portland, Oregon — and with a stacked lineup of fan favorites and community acclaim, there’s no sign of Modern Times slowing down.
Fruity, dank, and hugely aromatic, City of the Sun is one of the brewery’s main cannons in their hoppy arsenal. It’s easy to see why even bitter-resinous West Coast stalwarts changed their tune about haze after a sip of this Winter seasonal release, flooding social media announcements of its return with cathartic reactions like, “Rejoice!” and “Oh, F*** yeah.”
Bursts of bright tangerine, muskmelon, and candied lime from Mosaic and Motueka Hops wash over the palate, while the deep pine notes of Simcoe bring balance to the finish. A lean, dry malt bill lends a silky smooth texture and uplifts the hop flavors, letting their citrusy tones shine through in every sip. The 7.6% ABV slips by like a carefree sunny daydream.
Hopheads all along the coast are pleased as punch to find Modern Times limited releases in their local bottleshops, but for now, West Coast fans are the only lucky ones able to find them. Crack open a couple cans of City of the Sun to share with your juice-lovin’ buddies and you’ll get a taste of why Modern Times is setting the standard for Pacific Northwest haze.
