A Note on This Beer
I’m addicted to Coffee Beers. I’ve probably tasted more than most people have tasted actual coffee. There’s no shortage of good dark Coffee Beers out there, but sometimes I’m looking for something that breaks me out of my roasted malt monotony.
So when I found the golden-hued Cafe Blonde Coffee Cream Ale from Ahnapee, this tiny brewery from Wisconsin, I brought back as many bottles as I could stuff into my suitcase.
I cracked open a bottle as soon as I got home and called up my guy Joe — he’s my closest beer buddy, and actually the one who got me jazzed on java brewskis in the first place. I knew I could blow his mind with this one. I decided to test his seasoned taste buds and told him to cover his eyes. Here’s what went down in our blind Cafe Blonde tasting:
- Joe took a whiff and let out a long sigh of satisfaction: “Mmm, smells like sitting in my favorite cafe before closing time, when all you can smell is freshly roasted beans. Exquisite.”
- He took the first sip: “Hmm, there’s a stronger roasted flavor than I was expecting, but it goes down incredibly smooth. Almost like an Americano with a splash of cream.”
- Then, Joe took a big ol’ gulp: “It’s very light, with a soft and pillowy texture, almost like steamed milk with the perfect amount of foam. My guess is it’s either a Brown Ale or a Porter.”
With a pleased expression, Joe took off the blindfold. But when he saw the pale golden brew sitting in front of him, his smugness turned to shock. His eyes bugged out to cartoonish levels and his jaw nearly hit the floor: “A Coffee Cream Ale? Seriously? Phil, you may have just found my new favorite Coffee Beer.”
Get your hands on a few bottles of Ahnapee’s Cafe Blonde, invite over your favorite Coffee Beer addict, and challenge them in your own blind tasting. You’ll take pride in stumping them — but with a beer this delicious, everyone’s a winner.
