A Note on This Beer
Hey buddy want one of the world’s best beers? It’ll only cost you a fiver…
Getting the world’s best anything for under five dollars seems downright criminal. You must have seriously shady connections to get such a high quality deal.
Actually, with beer, the only people you need to know are monks.
Nestled along the Danube river in southern Germany lies Weltenburger Kloster, one of the oldest brewing monasteries in the world. A thousand years of brewing experience lies behind their Asam Doppelbock, which won the World Beer Award for best Bock in 2007, is awarded "outstanding" on BeerAdvocate and a 100 percent on RateBeer.
As a Doppelbock, Asam provides rich flavors similar to those of a Quadrupel, the beer style that is often ranked the best in the world. Sure, there may be half as many fermentations and a relatively modest 6.9% ABV to the Asam, but it packs the massive roasty goodness of the world’s finest.
Asam kicks off with a complex nose of rich hay, prunes and roast malts. A taste reveals an equally refined palate of tobacco, dark, salty caramel and toasted grains. The slightly creamy, slightly dry finish makes it drinkable by the steinful or the snifterful.
You might feel a little guilty at first as you enjoy so much flavor for such a reasonable price. Don’t worry, if you just share the world class beer you’ve found with a friend, you’ll feel a lot better. Conveniently packed in two packs for sharing.
